Ask a Nutritionist

The "Ask a Nutritionist" blog is an open forum for Soldiers to get general information about nutrition and healthy eating habits.  It is not intended as a substitute for personal nutritional counseling.  If you ahve specific nutritional needs or have special considerations such as diabetes or food allergies, please arrange a personal nutritional counseling through your Primary Healthcare Provider before making any adjustments to your diet.

  1. What should we consume (beside water) prior to conducting morning PT? Most of us are only awake 30-60 minutes before we exercise so can't digest too much. Does it matter if we are doing cardio versus muscle strength? Most workouts are 60-90 minutes.

  2. Great question. If you are eating 30-60 min before PT, consume a carbohydrate-rich snack before exercise to top off muscle stores. If you don't feel like eating early in the morning, liquids, like Gatorade, may be a better
    choice than whole foods. Choose pre-exercise snacks that are low in fat and fiber to ensure optimal digestion. Suggestions: fruit, granola bar, Carnation Instant Breakfast mixed with skim milk, or bread with jelly.
